Drones — A Necessity In A Time Of Crisis
Entering into the 2020s, drones are flying high both figuratively and literally. They are most commonly used in military applications, aerial photography, and product deliveries. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)have become the ultra-hot technology.
How can drones help us during this Pandemic?
Drones already have been trialed to deliver food and medical supplies to areas hit by disaster, such as Haiti, by a startup called Matternet. On April 27, 2020, the company issued a press release detailing how they joined forces with UPS to fight COVID-19.
The expeditious delivery of vaccines, medications, and medical supplies directly to the source could curve outbreaks of life-threatening communicable diseases. Communication equipment, mobile technology, portable shelter comprise the essential list of what could be delivered quickly to areas where critical infrastructure damage would prevent ground or typical air transport.
Smaller indoor drones are able to deliver medicine to the bedside of a patient from the pharmacy, thus eliminating some human contact. This would lead to faster and less error-prone administration of medications. Healthcare workers and pharmacists can work more efficiently as supplies can be sent to the bedside immediately.
